TRACT 141: YOUR RELIGION OR NEIGHBOUR?

"But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him" Luke 10:33-34.

A preacher once said, "..don't tell me what you believe but show me how you treat other people and I will tell you what you believe!". Jesus never commanded us to love our religion more than our neigbours but to love God (serve God in righteousness), and love our neighbours. When my religion tries to come between me and my neighbour, I will choose my neighbour first (Anonymous). The parable told by Jesus of a good Samaritan man was an illustration on how every true worshipper of God should relate with neighbours and strangers regardless of religion, denomination affiliation, tribe or nationality.

A man was attacked by robbers on his way from Jerusalem down to Jericho; stripped of his cloth, wounded and left half dead. By chance, a passerby who happened to be a priest(clergy man) looked on him lying helplessly and went on his way. Likewise, a Levite (worker in God's sanctuary) looked on him and passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan (stranger), as he journeyed came where he was and had compassion on him. He treated his wound, took him to a physician for further treatment and paid for his treatment. The Good Samaritan did not allow his religion or his tribal affiliation prevent him from demonstrating his love for God to a stranger; while the priest and Levite who professed to be worshippers and lovers of God failed in agape love.

Agape love (God kind of love) is what the world needs and it is only find in Jesus. Jesus first loved us by sacrificing himself for us on the Cross of Calvary and he expects every true worshipper to love others unconditionally. No one can demonstrate his/her love to God and his neighbours without first having a deep sense of gratitude to Jesus. Gratitude to Christ propells every true worshipper of God daily to reciprocate Christ's love to neigbours and strangers in kindness, generosity, meekness, courtesy, patience and in all good works. By these, Neighbours (sinners, backsliders and unbelievers) would see Christ in a true worshipper, turn to God and also demonstrate agape love to others.

Paradventure you would like to be a true worshipper of God, kindly say this prayer.

Prayer: Thank you Heavenly Father for your love and word. I acknowledge that you first loved me by sending Jesus into the world to die and save my soul from going to hell. Have mercy upon me and forgive all my sins. Help me to worship you in Spirit and truth; and to treat my neighbours and strangers with agape love. In Jesus' Name I pray. Amen.
